While we all love the feel of fresh bedding, there is a frustrating obstacle that stands between you and ultimate comfort: putting the duvet cover on a duvet.

Think about it. How many times have you found yourself in a tangle of fabric, wrestling with both the duvet and duvet cover, making little to no progress with your bedding? Trust us, you’re not alone.

But don’t worry, we’re diving headfirst into the wonderful world of duvet covers, uncovering the easiest ways to put on a duvet cover!

So, prepare to say goodbye to duvet dilemmas once and for all with our favorite duvet cover tricks, below.

1. The 'traditional' method

Let’s start nice and simple, shall we?

After all, if you’ve only recently made the change from comforter to duvet, putting on a duvet cover might be a completely new skill you need to learn. So, while the traditional method might not be the easiest way to put on a duvet cover, it is the best place to start for beginners.

To learn the traditional method of how to put on a duvet cover, read our simple step-by-step guide, below:

  1. Start by laying the duvet flat on your bed. Then, you want to turn the duvet cover inside out.
  2. Lay the inside out duvet cover on top of the duvet. You want to make sure the opening in the duvet cover is at the foot of the bed and all the corners are aligned.
  3. Stand at the foot of the bed and reach into the duvet cover, grabbing the top corners of the duvet through the fabric.
  4. Still holding the corners of both the duvet and the duvet cover, flip the cover to the right side out, covering the top of the duvet.
  5. Slide the duvet cover down the rest of the duvet, adjusting and smoothing out as you go, until the entire duvet is inside the duvet cover.
  6. Now for the finishing touches of this duvet cover trick! Close the opening of the duvet cover to keep the insert secure and place the duvet cover on top of your sheets.

And that’s all there is to putting on a duvet cover using the traditional method. Now, you just need to try this duvet cover trick for yourself – or would you like to learn some alternative methods to putting on a duvet cover?

2. The ‘California roll’ method

Also known as the burrito method for duvet covers, the duvet California roll technique is another way to put on a duvet cover without crying out in frustration. In fact, many people insist that the California roll method is the easiest way to put on a duvet cover – but we will let you be the judges of that!

If you want to try the duvet California roll method for yourself, just follow our step-by-step guide, below:

  1. To start this duvet cover trick, turn the duvet cover inside out and lay it flat on your bed, with the opening at the foot of your bed.
  2. Lay your duvet on top of the duvet cover, ensuring that the corners are aligned for both duvet and duvet cover.
  3. Starting from the head of the bed, roll both the duvet and the cover together tightly towards the foot of the bed. Make sure to keep the roll as tight as possible.
  4. Once you've reached the end, reach inside the duvet cover opening and grab the rolled-up duvet and cover.
  5. With the rolled-up duvet and cover in hand, flip the entire roll over so that the duvet cover is now on top, and the duvet is underneath.
  6. Unroll the duvet and cover towards the head of the bed, spreading them out as you go.
  7. Once the duvet is fully unrolled inside the cover, reach inside and straighten out the corners of the duvet so that they match up with the corners of the cover.
  8. To finish up, close the opening of the duvet cover and smooth out any wrinkles or creases for a neat and tidy look!

Bear in mind that the duvet California roll trick might take a couple of attempts to get just right. Follow our steps above when putting on a duvet cover and let us know if this solves your duvet dilemmas!

3. The ‘ghost’ method

For this duvet cover trick (or treat), you need to channel the Halloween ghost costumes of your childhood. Sound a bit confusing? Don’t worry, we’ve got all the details for this clever and unconventional technique for putting on a duvet cover.

To try the ghost method when putting on a duvet cover, have a read of our step-by-step guide, below:

  1. Start by laying the duvet flat across your bed.
  2. Next, turn the duvet cover inside out and drape it over your head and body, like a ghost costume (which is where this duvet cover trick gets its namesake).
  3. Keeping your arms inside the duvet cover, reach up and pinch the corners within the cover.
  4. With your hands still holding the corners tightly, stand at the head of the bed and grab the top corners of the duvet as well, holding both cover and duvet corners together.
  5. Lift the corners up and let the duvet cover fall over the duvet, giving it a gentle shake to ensure the entire insert is within the cover.
  6. Lay the duvet and duvet cover back on the bed to admire your handiwork, smoothing out any wrinkles or creases spoiling your neat finish.
  7. All that’s left to do is close up the opening of the duvet cover. Easy!

While you can try this duvet cover trick by yourself, we’d recommend using two people to put on a duvet cover with the ghost method. This just ensures you don’t bump into any furniture while in ‘ghost mode’!

And there you have it, three simple methods to put on a duvet cover. But which duvet cover trick will you try first? Maybe you like the sound of the duvet California roll method, or perhaps you’d prefer to play dress up with the ghost technique!
